There is a growing body of data on the important physiological role of L-glutamate in the CNS. In the present review, we have summarized recent data on the neurochemistry of the glutamatergic system in humans, including the data on intracellular compartmentalization of glutamate in the brain and the variety and functions of glutamate receptors and transporters.
