<description>Test of modified ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene for prosthetic repair of the ossicular chain
Khorov, O; Struk, V.; Novasialetski, U.
Background: Our aim was to evaluate the effect of implantation of a surface-modified ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) of high density into a rabbit ear s bulla in terms of biochemical and immunological blood parameters and middle ear tissue morphology.&#13;
Material and Methods: Exactly 35 rabbits were used, divided into 3 groups. In the lsl group the ears were implanted with a piece of UHMWPE 6 mm long and 1 mm in diameter the surface of which had been modified with a laser. In the 2nd group similar titanium implants were used. The 3rd group was a control (5 rabbits). The 1st and 2"d groups comprised 15 animals which were euthanased 15, 60, and 90 days after implantation (5 animals each).&#13;
Results: Comparison of the two experimental groups with the control group revealed no significant differences in biochemical and immunological blood parameters or tissue morphology in the middle ear at different times after surgery.&#13;
Conclusions: UHMWPE of high density can be regarded as a material suitable for developing prostheses for the ossicular chain.

<title>Indicators of life quality related to reproductive health in 15-18-year-old teenagers of Belarus</title>
<link>http://elib.grsmu.by/handle/files/825</link>
<description>Indicators of life quality related to reproductive health in 15-18-year-old teenagers of Belarus
Surmach, M.
Introduction. Studying life quality related to health (QL-RH) is considered in pediatric practice as one of priority directions, and the results are recommended for use in long-term government programs on the improvement of health of youth. Despite the fact that Belarus has joined the WHO program of services "friendly to teenagers and youth", practically immediately after it was approved, the question about the lack of techniques for an estimation of new services efficiency on the basis of QL-RH appeared.&#13;
Aim. To develop and approve "The technique of estimation of life quality related to reproductive health (QL-RRH) in 15-18-yearold teenagers of Belarus", to receive the population indicators.&#13;
Material &amp; methods. The approbation of the methodology was done according to a population survey (N=949, 463 girls and 486 boys). The questionnaire data were preliminarily processed and that allowed to establish the value of each factor and their influence on other components of QL-RRH.&#13;
Results. The results testify that in the spheres demanding urgent correction, both in boys and in girls it is necessary to carry on medical-hygienic literacy and medical care activity. In both specified components the level of the factor of QL-RRH is average. Therefore it is necessary to carry on the medical-hygienic training of teenagers, especially in the area of reproductive health (consultations of specialists, availability of information about medical services). For girls it is necessary to add the information about proper nutrition, physical activity, and also to involve them in active leisure at schools, colleges. It is necessary to carry on accessible psychological consultations for teenagers (with a monitoring mode).&#13;
Conclusions. The results allow to confirm the technique validity. The social factors influencing QL-RRH testify that the forecast is optimum.

<description>Historia kily i pomocy dermatologiczno-wenerologicznejw w Grodnie
Khvorik, D.; Kudriawiec, A.; Szpakow, A.; Szinkowicz, T.
The article provides historical data on the development of dermatological-venereal aid in Grodno region over the last centuries. The authors describe the history, epidemiology and risk factors of syphilis in Grodno. The data present the history of treatment and prevention of sexually transmitted infections from the beginnings of the 18,h century until the end of the 20th century. The information has been collected on the basis of medical documents stored by the Grodno National Archives. The article comprises unique facts of the treatment provided for the infected in various historical periods. Special attention was paid to the prevention of the disease among soldiers and peasants and the actions undertaken by the police against prostitution. The informative programs which were implemented among factory workers have also been presented. To ensure proper health care, new clinics with the preventive units were opened in Nowogrodek along with the Venereal Clinic. The authors include short history of the dermatological and venereal units as well as the Dermatological and Venereal Departments in the Medical Academy in Grodno. The doctors and scientists who contributed to dermatological and venereal treatment in Grodno Region were mentioned
syphilis, history, dermatological and venereal care, Grodno.

<title>Psychosocial distress as a risk factor of ischemic heart disease mortality</title>
<link>http://elib.grsmu.by/handle/files/795</link>
<description>Psychosocial distress as a risk factor of ischemic heart disease mortality
Razvodovsky, Y. E.
Background: Ischemic heart disease (IHD) is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the industrialized world. Recent research evidence suggests that psychosocial distress has been implicated as both a precursor to IHD and a significant risk factor for death in those with established IHD. According to WHO, psychosocial distress will be the most harmful risk factor for the development of IHD in the near future. Some experts have underlined the importance of the psychosocial distress of economic and political reforms as the main reason for the IHD mortality crisis in Russia in the 1990s. The aim of the present study was to estimate the effect of psychosocial distress on IHD mortality rate in Russia.&#13;
Subjects and methods: Trends in age-adjusted, sex-specijic suicide (as an integral indicator for psychosocial distress) and IHD mortality rate in Russia from 1965 to 2005 were analyzed employing a distributed lags analysis in order to assess the bivariate relationship between the two time series.&#13;
Results: Time series analysis indicates the presence of a statistically significant association between the two time series for males at lags 0 and females at lags 0 and J.&#13;
Conclusions: These findings suggest that the Russian IHD mortality crisis is most likely to have been precipitated by the psychosocial distress imposed by rapid societal transformation. The experience of Russia should serve as an example of how societal-level change can influence the health of a population.

<title>Inhibition of Rat Muscle and Liver Phosphofructokinases by High Doses of Ethanol</title>
<link>http://elib.grsmu.by/handle/files/791</link>
<description>Inhibition of Rat Muscle and Liver Phosphofructokinases by High Doses of Ethanol
Lelevich, S. V.; Khrustalev, V. V.; Barkovsky, E. V.
Activities of both rat muscle and liver phosphofructokinases are significantly inhibited after a single ethanol intake in the dose of 2.5 g per kg of body weight. This inhibitory effect is indirect, since ethanol in concentration (50 mM) close to that established after 2.5 g per kg of body weight intake cannot decrease their activities in vitro. Inhibition of liver phosphofruclokinase activity after the 5.0 g per kg ethanol intake may be direct, since liver phosphofructokinase activity decreases in vitro when ethanol is added to supernatants of rat liver tissue in 100 mM concentration. According to the results of molecular docking, ethanol at high concentrations can be bound by adenine-binding pocket of the allosteric ADP-binding site of liver phosphofructokinase (Asp543, Phe308, Phe538, and Phe671) and its activation by ADP can be blocked by C2H5OH molecule. Direct inhibition of muscle phosphofructokinase activity, probably due to the binding of ethanol to the similar ADP-binding site, is possible when the concentration of ethanol (500 mM) is much higher than the level which can be established in living cells. So, inhibition of muscle phosphofructokinase activity after a single 5.0 g per kg intake is indirect and probably linked with the inhibition of the enzyme by elevated citrate and phosphoenolpyruvate levels.
