Aim. To evaluate the prevalence of psychoactive substance abuse among the population of Belarus.
Material and methods. The data on registered drug abusers, who were recorded in the Narcological Register in health care institutions between 1998 and 201 2, were analyzed.
Results. During that period the significant growth (by 3.5 times) in the number of recorded drug abusers was observed, mainly of those who abuse cannabinoides and opiates.
Conclusion. It was assumed that the total number of drug abusers in Belarus may be about 6-10 times greater than the number of detected persons. The common trends and patterns of drug abuse in Belarus, Russia and Ukraine were highlighted with the least manifestation of this phenomenon in Belarus.

Khurs, Y.
Introduction. The problem of the organization of rational nutrition of students is an integral part of a healthy lifestyle of young people.
Aim. The purpose of the research was hygienic assessment of medical students' character of nutrition.
Material & Methods. The assessment of the physical development, nutritional status, the state of the functional system of an organism in students were carried out. The research objects were 50 second-year students of the Faculties of General Medicine and Pediatrics of Grodno State Medical University.
Results. It was established that the students did not use mass catering.
Conclusions. The obtained results indicate the need for an individual approach to the assessment of the burden of students' workload, taking into account the level of their motor activity. The inadequate energy value of actual nutrition and unbalanced diet lead to violation of the mechanisms of adaptation and to the development of nutritional disorders among medical students, which determines the need to optimize their nutrition.

Spatial regularity in suicides and alcohol psychoses in Belarus
Razvodovsky, Y. E.; Kandrychyn, S. V.
Objective. Epidemiological evidence suggests that rates of suicide mortality vary noticeably between the regions in Belarus with the regular spatial pattern in suicide distribution. The present study considers the effect of regional alcohol consumption as a factor responsible for regional variations in suicide rates.
Methods. The cross-sectional time series analysis of suicide and alcohol psychoses (as a proxy for alcohol consumption) rates by the regions of Belarus between 1990 and 2010 was made.
Results, in general, the regional variations of suicide and alcohol psychoses incidence rates have a similar spatial regularity, meaning that the regions with a high suicide rate also have a high alcohol psychoses incidence rate.
Conclusions. The findings on spatial relationship between suicide and alcohol psychoses incidence rates seem to support the hypothesis that considers the regional pattern of alcohol consumption as a factor responsible for suicide rate regional variations.

Dzeshka, M. S.; Lip, G. Y.
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is one of major problems of the contemporary cardiology. Ischaemic stroke is a common complication of the AF, and effective prophylaxis requires treatment with oral anticoagulants. The purpose of this current review article is to provide an overview of the various stroke and bleeding risk assessment scores that help decision making with respect to thromboprophylaxis.
Particular focus is made on the currently guideline-recommended stroke and bleeding risk scores, such as CHA2DS2-VASc (congestive heart failure or left ventricular dysfunction, hypertension, age >75, diabetes, stroke, vascular disease, age 65-74 and sex category [female]) and HAS-BLED (uncontrolled hypertension, abnormal renal/liver function, stroke, bleeding history or predisposition, labile international normalized ratio, elderly [e.g. age >65, frail condition], drugs [e.g. aspirin, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs]/excessive alcohol) is made. Future directions for improvement of predictive ability of risk assessment with clinical factors and biomarkers are also discussed.
